Hello good friends,
I know its been a while since I updated.  Nothing has changed significantly, and we feel as if we are on hold till the Hershey appointment - for the reevaluation of Merlin's liver.

He is getting stronger.  Last week at his Dr. appointment, they put him on some new medicine - an appetite enhancer, as well as an anti-depressant.- he agreed to take it, with reservations.
He still is not sleeping well - although better than a month ago.
And evidently the appetite enhancer is doing something, because he wants to eat everything under the sun!  Problem is, he can't digest a lot of those foods very well, and he has been struggling with indigestion and those horrible hiccups again!  He hasn't had those hiccups since we were in the hospital, so it is very disheartening to have them return.

We have seen a naturopathic Dr. about what could be done nutritionally to rebuild his liver.  And it is encouraging - if Merlin wants to, and can stick to the diet and detox regime.  So at least we have some choices before we go to Hershey.  He is saying that he does not want  to do chemo again.  I know that this is a very hard subject, and many of you will not agree with this mode of action - but we ask for your prayers as Merlin makes this decision.  He is still his own man, and I can't make him do or not do something that he does not have in mind.  So pray also for my patience to be the encouragement he needs me to be.

We went to the big Farm Show in Harrisburg last week, having borrowed a wheel chair so Merlin would not have to walk all the time.  Merlin enjoyed it immensely.  It was a difficult and emotional day for me.  I need to learn to count my blessings more, instead of dwelling on the changes in our lives. I've really been struggling.

Right now Merlin is at the Dr. getting his nutritional IV.  He can drive himself, its not far. This is really good for him, to know that he can get out!

The church has continued to help us with extra costs, such as the nutritional Dr. fees.  What a blessing this has been!!
Medicaid/Gateway has picked up all Medical expenses through the hospital.  Praise the Lord!
We are truly grateful for everyone that has helped us! What peace of mind we have knowing that the Lord is providing through His people!

I have a hard time 'not looking ahead', and getting overwhelmed.
School is going well, but again, I get very overwhelmed with trying to keep up with the children, house, and Merlin (with the decisions upon us...)

Merlin has been very discouraged.  Not sure that any plan of action is worth the effort.
So please, please pray for his will to live, and WANT to fight this thing within him.

We had a baby shower for Holli and Kylie at church last night.  Heidi did a fabulous job planning and putting it on.  What fun and good fellowship! :)

Wedding plans are moving along... I'm not doing much at this point.  We did help find a church - and it has been booked for April 17th.  Rich found an apartment in the Millersville area, about 20 to 25 minutes from our house.  They are doing most of the planning on their own, keeping us informed as they go.  New life and love - the excitement is precious in our lives!

Well, it is 2010.  We thank the Lord for new mercies each morning, and year!

I wanted to give an update on Merlin, since so many of you ask.  But we also have an announcement to make.  So, announcement first! :)

Heidi and Rich are engaged, and are planning an April Wedding!
What an awesome God we have! We are so blessed with a godly man for our dear godly daughter!  What a Joy!  There is No greater Joy (for parents) than to see their children walk with the Lord!  Praise Him!

Its been a busy last couple weeks, with both my brothers coming out for a few days each.  Dave and Renee were here over Christmas, and Jim was here over New Years!  Spread out the joy and blessing!  :)  What an encouragement!
And all the children and grandbaby home!  What a blessing!  :)

Merlin is able to talk on the phone more now, and it has really helped.
He is still pretty discouraged with his lack of energy. But he really is feeling better -even though it isn't fast enough for him to realize it himself.
He still needs the anti-nausea  medicine, but he is sleeping better.
Since the abscess drain tube was taken out the week before Christmas, and now he is finished with the antibiotics, he is gaining ground.  We are now this far past the infection, that it looks like it will not come back!  A big praise!  I think Merlin was so afraid of getting so sick again.

But Merlin is able to drive now, and feels like going out.  He has taken one of the children along so far.  It was great when he could go out with my brother to run errands!

And we were able to make it to church for the main service again on Sunday. So good to be in the house of the Lord for worship.
Every step forward is so wonderful!

We will be going to Hershey later this month for a reevaluation of the liver.  We pray for an encouraging report.
Also pray that the Lord will give us direction on nutrition and method of treatment.
Merlin is having a hard time taking much, or being interested in what he should be eating and taking to fight the remaining cancer.  I love him too much to not try.
Please pray for continued patience - I guess that's what patience is, isn't it- continued!?

School is moving on.  With our break in medical appointments, I have a little more time for the children, but have lots of catch up to do.
But there will also be the joy of wedding plans to be made in the next few months!
God makes no mistakes- But He loves us still!
We have so much to be thankful for - more than we can begin to list.
Thank-you everyone for your support and prayers and encouragement!

Merry Christmas!  Here is our Christmas card for the year that we sent out - many of you will have gotten it personally by email.  But for those of you who I don't have in email - here it is.  If you are a regular blog reader of mine, it will mostly be repeat information.  So bear with me...

To our Dear Friends and Family,
This year's letter is going to be a bit different.  As many of you know, Merlin has been very sick since July.  So, out of necessity, we will not be sending out our annual letter with pictures.  I will write this, hopefully brief letter, and send via email to all who have it - and via snail mail for those who don't.  But we have not taken a family pic this year at all, sorry.

We have many things to be thankful for!  Number one, to God for his faithfulness, and provision!  How God has used his children to provide support for us, is truly amazing!

And another major blessing is the arrival of our first Grandchild!  Holli and Daniel had a baby girl, Kylie Jo, on the 15th of Dec., weighing 6#13oz, and 21 in. long!  Precious, precious little miracle!!!  It is so wonderful to have a new life to focus on right now!

So, for those of you who do not know, Merlin was diagnosed with Rectal Cancer on his birthday in July, stage 4, metastasized to his liver. He has not been able to work since the first of Aug.  The pain was tremendous and building by the day... By the end of Aug, he started chemo infusion 24 hrs a day, for 5 days a week, and daily radiation treatments to shrink the tumor--for 6 1/2 grueling weeks!  5 awful, pain-filled weeks later- on Nov 11th, he had surgery to remove the tumor and surrounding colon, resulting in a colostomy.  After 9 days in the hospital, and 4 terrible days home, he was back in the hospital for 2 weeks with complications, and an abscess. He became very malnourished.  He is now home, healing, very weak, but pain FREE!!!  Praise the Lord!!!  We see the liver specialists in Hershey next month to find out our next step.

But the grace of our Loving Lord has sustained us in the midst of this valley.  Merlin has not been able to work since the first of Aug. The people of God have provided and embraced our family in ways I can't even describe!  Praise Him!!!

As our family gets older, so life has changed in ways we never dreamed.  The children seem to be doing OK.  Some ask a lot of questions, others, I need to draw out.  Our children were again part of the Mennonite Children's Choir of Lancaster this semester, after a hard struggle to make that decision.  Thanks to Philip who took the responsibility of driving the children to practices, and then concerts (as I was in the hospital with Merlin the entire time), it was a great blessing to the children!

I'll briefly tell about each child.  Cindi, 25, and husband Duane still live in Delaware. Holli, 24, and Daniel were blessed with little Kylie Jo!  Heidi, 22, spent the fall semester at God's Bible School in Cincinnati, OH, and is 'dating' Richard Sawyers, an airplane mechanic/pilot still earning his Commercial license, and who has been a big help and tremendous blessing over the hospitalizations.  Philip, 19, is at home, between a summer landscaping job, and part time roofing job.  Patti, 17, has her permit, in 11th grade, and  Abbi, 15, 10th grade have been doing a tremendous job running the house in our absence!  Peter, 13, 9th grade faithfully runs the barn-yard, and had a huge garden.  John, 12, 6th gr. is Peter's helper. Naomi, 9, 4th gr.,and our baby, Grace, 8, is in 3rd grade are learning to help out a lot with the household chores.  We are still homeschooling - with the help of friends right now.

Financially, Merlin was able to get unemployment.  We finally qualified for Medical Assistance, and received Medicaid!  PTL!!!!  Our church has been so wonderful to pick up the slack, and help all they could!  We don't take any of those blessings lightly - they are all gracious blessings to us right now!
You know, we never expected to be on the receiving end of 'charity'.  It is hard.  Merlin has been so 'moved'.  We are definitely humbled, and so very grateful for all that everyone has done for us.

We ask for your continued prayers for Merlin's healing!  Strength for the rest of us.
We have enjoyed the cards and letters, and now Christmas cards and letters!  Thank-you so much!
We are looking forward to having all the children home on Christmas Day, along with new baby Kylie Jo!!!  :)
If any of you want to follow our journey/Merlin's health, and have Internet access, you are free to view my blogg on www.xanga.com/soapspecialty.  Or give me your email address, and I will add you to my update list.
God Bless you all!
Have a wonderful New Year!

Ok! So I was waiting for an important announcement before I posted again!  And we have it today!
Holli and Daniel Oberholtzer are the proud parents of a baby girl, Kylie Jo, who arrived into this world at 8:30 am this morning, Dec. 15, 2009.  She weighs 6# 13oz, and is 21 inches long!  So very precious!!!
Kylie Jo Oberholtzer
After a long labor, they had a C-section, but all are doing well!  Very excited little Kylie is in their arms.
Heidi Jo, Philip, Patti, Grace and I went into the hospital to see them this evening.  Merlin wasn't feeling well enough to go.  :(  THAT was hard on him!  He is anxious to see our first Grandbaby!!
Gramma and Kylie Jo

Merlin is gaining strength each day.  He doesn't see much progress, but I do!!!
Today was a big day for him.  His first time out in a week, since we got home.  He had a nutritional IV done this morning, which we really hope will pick him up.
Then this afternoon we went back into the hospital for a CT scan of the abscess area.  They determined that there was still too much fluid and infection in there to come out yet, so left the drain tube in.  We were very glad that we had the scan done before they pulled the tube.  The radiologist that did it and read the scan was very, very good.  And we feel good about leaving it in for a few days or  up to a week- more.

But with all the moving around, and messing with the abscess and tube... Merlin was feeling rotten tonight.
His incision is healing nicely.  Only 2 holes remain that need to be 'packed' every day.
He has no pain anymore!!!!  Praise the Lord!!!
He aches a lot, and can't seem to get comfortable... and he still doesn't sleep well at night.?
But he spends most of his days in the livingroom - on the couch, or the recliner, moving from one place to another, and around the house. And we try to find things to keep him interested, and awake!  :)

We are so very grateful to be home!  Heidi and the girls have been putting up the Christmas tree and decorations today...
Can't believe Christmas is almost here already...And a new baby!  How special it makes remembering our Savior's birth.

As an after note... on my Mom.  When she saw the orthopedic surgeon in Elkhart, he said that there is nothing wrong with her knee!  He saw what the xray tech. saw out here, but said that it won't effect her walking, so get up and go exercise that knee!!!  Mom and Dad were flabbergasted, happy, sad, and frustrated!!!  To leave here before their first great grandbaby was born...  :(  But we were very thankful for the week that they were here supporting us while Merlin was still in the hospital.  And they left when we left!  :)

Well, I hope to get some kind of a Christmas letter written here in xanga, and to send email.  Maybe I can have some better pictures of the Mom and Dad of Kylie!  :)  And Merlin, too!
Bless you all in this week before Christmas.  Take time to enjoy your family and friends!
In Christ,
Sheri
